What is Blu-ray?
The Blu-ray name is a
combination of "blue," for the color of the laser that is used, and "ray," for
optical ray. The "e" in "blue" was purposefully left out, according to the
manufacturers, because an everyday word cannot be trademarked. Blu-ray or Blu-ray Disc (BD) will be the next generation optical
media, was jointly developed by Blu-ray Disc Association (DBA), and a group of
the leading consumer electronics manufacture such as Sony, and Philips. Blu-ray
Disc format was developed to fulfill the inevitable technological demands, it
enable recording, rewriting, and playback of high definition video (HD), and
larger storage for data. Blu-ray media are capable of storing more than five
times as much as a normal single layer DVD, holding about 25 GB of data on a
single layer and 50 GB on a double-layer disc. Furthermore, BDA and the leading
consumer electronics group is predicted to release an 8 layers disc, 200 GB, in
the near future. This extra capacity alone can offer consumers with greater and
better experiences.
Blu-ray disc can achieved such capacity is because it uses a blue-violet laser
instead of the red laser that is used for DVD. The key point is that
Blue-violet laser has a shorter wavelength (405 nm) instead of the traditional
red laser which is 650 nm (illustrated in the picture above). The shorter wavelength make it possible to focus the
laser spot with even greater precision, this allows the data to be packed more
tightly and stored in less space physically. Which in turn store more data in
the same amount of physical space.
